Herbs play an important role in ensuring the health of your Clans. Below, we have compiled a list of all the herbs currently found in the ClanGen base game, along with additional information that will hopefully prove useful for Writers, Coders, and Players alike!

Betony

Description:

  • Flowers are typically pink or purple in color and funnel-shaped. They are not overly fragrant, though they may emit a faint, minty scent in warm conditions
  • Leaves are green, oval or heart-shaped with scalloped edges, and appear somewhat veiny along the surface. When crushed, they give off a mild, earthy, and slightly bitter scent
  • Total height of plant is typically 1 - 2 feet
  • Quite attractive to bees and other pollinators

General Uses:

  • Increases overall health and strength
  • Helps alleviate breathing issues

Administration Methods:

  • Ingested by cat

Blackberry

Description:

  • Leaves are green, oval-shaped, and serrated with a pale, fuzzy underside
  • Fruit is comprised of many smaller clusters, and may range in color from white to red to black depending on ripeness

General Uses:

  • Eases the pain of bee stings

Administration Methods:

  • Leaves are crushed into a poultice, then applied to the affected area

Burdock

Description:

  • Plant is a tall-stemmed thistle with dark leaves
  • Produces a prickly pink-to-purple flower from July to October
  • Roots are dark and difficult for to dig up
  • Can reach heights of up to 6 feet
  • Gives off a sharp smell and has a bitter taste

General Uses:

  • Used to soothe and treat wounds, particularly if infected

Administration Methods:

  • Root is cleaned of soil, then chewed into a pulp and applied topically

Catmint

Description:

  • A tall, soft, leafy plant with gray-green leaves and a hairy stem
  • Produces flowers from late spring through to fall. Flowers are small, tubular, and may range in color from white to purple, with white flowers exhibiting purple-pink spotting
  • Typically reaches 2 - 3 feet in height
  • Very fragrant. Smells particularly delicious to cats

General Uses:

  • Used to treat various respiratory illnesses

Administration Methods:

  • Ingested by cat

Cobwebs

Description:

  • Long, thin, shiny strands spun into a web by spiders
  • Sticky and has a dusty scent

General Uses:

  • Primarily used to slow or stop bleeding and soak up blood
  • Also also be used to bind broken bones
  • Can be used to fasten poultices to fur

Administration Methods:

  • Pressed onto or wrapped around affected areas

Daisy

Description:

  • Flower is round and features thin, white, oval-shaped petals and a yellow center
  • Leaves are green, somewhat paddle-shaped, and grow solely at the plant's base. When eaten, they have a bitter taste
  • Can reach heights of up to 8 inches

General Uses:

  • Soothes aching joints
  • Used as a traveling herb

Administration Methods:

  • Chewed into a paste, then applied topically

Dandelion

Description:

  • Yellow-flowered plant with a hollow green or purplish stem and green leaves that grow in a rosette around the base of the plant
  • After 9 - 15 days, the yellow flower becomes a white puffball of seeds, which are then dispersed by the wind
  • Stems secrete a milky sap
  • Leaves vary in shape, but are typically 2 - 18 inches in length with jagged or tooth-like edges

General Uses:

  • Alleviates pain
  • Reduces fevers

Administration Methods:

  • Leaves are chewed and ingested

Elder Leaves

Description:

  • Leaves are green, oval-shaped with pointed tips, 4 to 12 inches long, and possess slightly jagged edges. Surface appears slightly veiny
  • Grows on shrubs and trees that can reach heights of up to 33 feet, though most typically grow no taller than 20 feet
  • Produces a clean scent

General Uses:

  • Used to soothe pain, particularly pain caused by muscle injuries

Administration Methods:

  • Made into a poultice and applied topically

Goldenrod

Description:

  • Plant with small, bright yellow flowers
  • Height varies depending on exact species, and can be anywhere from 6 inches to 6 feet
  • Leaves are green and oval-shaped with pointed tips

General Uses:

  • Cleans and heals wounds

Administration Methods:

  • Chewed into a poultice, then applied to the wound

Horsetail

Description:

  • A green, bristly-stemmed plant with fleshy stalks
  • Typically between 3.9 inches and 2 feet in height, though some species may grow larger
  • Scent is pungent and clean
  • Contains a bitter sap
  • Stings when applied to a wound

General Uses:

  • Fights infection
  • Can be used to treat minor wounds

Administration Methods:

  • Chewed into a poultice, then applied to the wound

Juniper

Description:

  • A dark green, spiky-leaved shrub or tree with purple-blue berries
  • Height can be anywhere from 6 inches to 130 feet, though typically does not go above 80 feet
  • Berries possess a pungent scent

General Uses:

  • Can be used to treat coughs and breathing issues
  • Relieves stomachaches
  • Settles nerves
  • Improves overall health and strength
  • Can be combined with ragwort and/or daisy to create a poultice that soothes aching joints

Administration Methods:

  • Typically eaten, though can be used in a poultice to relieve joint pain

Lungwort

Description:

  • Leaves are green and speckled, with the speckles range in color from light green to white
  • Flowers are small, funnel-shaped, and may be pink, blue, purple, or red depending on species and growth state
  • Stems are "hairy"
  • Plant typically reaches a max height of 1 - 2 feet, but may be shorter or taller depending on exact species

General Uses:

  • Used to treat serious respiratory illnesses

Administration Methods:

  • Ingested by cat

Mallow

Description:

  • Leaves are large and fuzzy with a rose-like scent
  • Flowers consist of five petals and are most commonly pink, purple, or white in color
  • Height ranges from 0.5 to 4 feet depending on exact species
  • Grow well even in environments with little water
  • Has a bitter taste

General Uses:

  • Soothes stomachaches
  • Can be used to treat coughs, though is less effective than other herbs

Administration Methods:

  • Leaves are eaten

Marigold

Description:

  • A flowering plant with bright petals
  • Varies in size from roughly 4 inches to about 7 feet depending on species
  • Flowers may be orange, yellow, red, gold, white, or multicolored
  • Stems are most commonly green and have a strong scent
  • Has a strong taste

General Uses:

  • Stops infections and bleeding
  • Can be used to ease inflammation of stiff joints

Administration Methods:

  • Chewed into a poultice and applied to the affected area

Moss

Description:

  • A soft, spongy plant often found growing on trees and rocks and in wet environments
  • Most commonly found in various shades of green

General Uses:

  • Used as bedding
  • May be used to soak up and administer liquids such as mouse bile and water
  • Can be used to stop bleeding when wet

Administration Methods:

  • Pressed onto affected areas
  • Used to drink fluid from

Mullein

Description:

  • Plant has large, velvety-gray leaves during its first year. During its second year, it has a single stalk with densely grouped flowers
  • Height ranges from 1.6 to 9.8 feet
  • Flowers are most commonly yellow, but may also be white, red, pink, or purple

General Uses:

  • Treats coughs and soothes breathing problems

Administration Methods:

  • Leaves are chewed and eaten

Oak Leaves

Description:

  • Leaves from an oak tree
  • Appearance varies depending on the tree's exact species, but most are broad with scalloped edges
  • Trees can reach heights of over 100 feet

General Uses:

  • Helps prevent infection, but cannot fight an infection that has already begun

Administration Methods:

  • Chewed and eaten

Plantain

Description:

  • Stalky plant topped with a spike of flowers
  • Flowers are small and are most commonly green, brown, or greenish-brown
  • Height depends on species, with some being under 6 inches, and others being up to 2 feet
  • Leaves are green and grow in a rosette at the base of the plant

General Uses:

  • Treats coughs and respiratory infections
  • Can be used to treat parasites + any diseases they may carry

Administration Methods:

  • Ingested by cat
  • Made into a poultice and applied to a cat's fur to fight external parasites

Poppy

Description:

  • Flowers come in a wide variety of colors, but are most commonly red with a black center
  • Flowers have 4 - 6 petals
  • May reach heights of over 3 feet
  • Many species of poppy secrete a milky liquid (latex) when damaged
  • Seeds are tiny, round, and typically black

General Uses:

  • Soothes shocked or distressed cats
  • Reduces pain
  • Can help a cat sleep

Administration Methods:

  • Seeds are removed from the flower, then eaten
  • Not recommended for nursing queens or in large/long-term doses

Ragwort

Description:

  • Tall plant with a fairly straight stem and yellow flowers
  • Can reach heights of nearly 7 feet
  • Somewhat similar in appearance to Tansy
  • Leaves produce an unpleasant smell
  • Tastes foul to cats

General Uses:

  • Can be used alongside Juniper to make a poultice for aching joints
  • Used to keep a cat's strength up

Administration Methods:

  • Made into a poultice and applied to affected area
  • Ingested by cat

Raspberry

Description:

  • Leaves are green, oval or teardrop-shaped, and have serrated edges despite being soft to the touch
  • Fruit is typically red in color and is comprised of many smaller clusters
  • Grows on shrubs that can range in height from 1.5 to 10 feet
  • Prior to fruiting, raspberry plants bear small, white flowers

General Uses:

  • Eases pain
  • Stops blood loss during kitting

Administration Methods:

  • Leaves are chewed into a pulp, then eaten

Rosemary

Description:

  • Flowering plant with green, needle-like leaves
  • Can grow up to 6 feet in height
  • Flowers are most commonly blue-purple in color, but may also be various shades of pink, white, blue, or purple
  • Has a pungent scent

General Uses:

  • Relieves breathing issues
  • Eases headaches
  • Used to mask the scent of death

Administration Methods:

  • Eaten by cat when used for medicinal purposes

Tansy

Description:

  • Flowering plant with dark green leaves
  • Typically reaches between 1 to 3 feet in height
  • Leaves are small with pointy, almost saw-like edges
  • Flowers are yellow, button-like, and flat on the top
  • Scent is strong and sweet, while the taste is bitter

General Uses:

  • Can be used to treat wounds
  • Relieves coughs and soothes irritated throats
  • Useful when covering up scents

Administration Methods:

  • Stems are chewed

Thyme

Description:

  • Low-growing, flowering plant with small, green leaves and a woody stem
  • Flowers may be yellow, white, or purple
  • Typically does not grow above 1 foot in height
  • Certain species may exhibit "hairy" leaves
  • Has a pungent scent

General Uses:

  • Calms anxiety and reduces shock
  • Lessens the effects of malnourishment and starvation
  • Treats diarrhea
  • Relieves pain
  • Helps cats recover their strength

Administration Methods:

  • Leaves are chewed and eaten
  • When used to treat shock or anxiety, the scent can alternatively be breathed in

Wild Garlic

Description:

  • Plant with green leaves and stem and a bulb buried underground
  • Several species produce flowers. These flowers are most commonly white and star-shaped, but may appear in various other colors and/or shapes depending on the exact species
  • Has a sharp, tangy scent and a potent, slightly spicy flavor

General Uses:

  • Treats wounds
  • Fights infections
  • Heals burns
  • Can draw poison out of wounds

Administration Methods:

  • Cat rolls in a patch OR has it rubbed on the affected area
