Skill Dictionary¶
What Are Skills?¶
A skill in ClanGen is a descriptor that dictates something a cat specializes in or is more talented at compared to their peers. Skills dictate some of the potential strengths of a cat, actions they might take, and things they may have a higher chance of success in. They do not have any bearing on a cat's personality.
A cat can have up to two skills. While internally in development circles and as a constraint, we use certain names, skills are displayed to players in a tier system with names depending on the cat's mastery of their skills. A chart can be found here.
For this documentation, each skill is listed under its internal name.
Skills¶
TEACHER¶
Cats with the TEACHER skill are skilled teachers who can readily pass on knowledge to both their peers and apprentices. Cats with the TEACHER skill can teach cats with any skill at an increased rate (except for supernatural skills, which cannot be trained). This skill is particularly applicable in patrols and events where cats are learning information from another cat or are being formally trained.
Canon Examples: Rosepetal, Tawnypelt
HUNTER¶
While nearly every cat can hunt, cats with the HUNTER skill are are unusually gifted. Those that reach the skill tier ‘Renowned Hunter’ may go down in legend as one of the best hunters of their Clan. This skill is particularly applicable in hunting patrols. However, it can also be used in situations where tracking (like one would prey) is required (e.g. hunting other cats).
Canon Examples: Sandstorm, Sparkpelt
FIGHTER¶
Cats with the FIGHTER skill are particularly talented in battle, whether it be against warriors, rogues, or predators. While all warriors learn to fight, these cats can accomplish feats beyond others. This skill is applicable in patrols and events where physical conflict is relevant. It can also be used to represent a cat’s physicality and athleticism.
Canon Examples: Scourge, Tigerstar I, Lionblaze
RUNNER¶
Cats with the RUNNER skill are the fastest cats among their peers. Not only are they swift, but their agility is renowned and they run circles around predator and prey alike. This skill is applicable in border patrols, hunting patrols, and scenarios linked to battle. It can also be used to represent a cat’s athleticism.
Canon Examples: Windstar, Ashfoot, Runningwind
CLIMBER¶
Cats with the CLIMBER skill are remarkably skilled at scaling the terrain, whether it be trees or cliffs. Their skill sets them apart from other climbers of the Clan due to speed or safety. This skill is applicable in events and patrols involving heights, especially to lessen the risk of height-related challenges.
Canon Examples: Cherrytail, Sparrowpelt
SWIMMER¶
Cats with the SWIMMER skill are unusually strong swimmers and have little issue with getting their pelt wet. Their skill set makes them perfect for patrols involving any body of water and also makes them less prone to hazards such as drowning.
Canon Examples: Silverstream, Riverstar
STEALTH¶
Cats with the STEALTH skill are adept at stalking and hiding. Compared to their Clanmates, they disappear into cover with ease and remain undetected by predator and prey alike. This skill is applicable in events and patrols in which stealth is a focus or would be advantageous to survival.
Canon Examples: Shadowstar, Ivypool
SPEAKER¶
Cats with the SPEAKER skill are gifted with their words, whether they are used to inspire, outsmart, or deceive. They are skilled at communicating their ideas to others and convincing others. This skill is applicable in events and patrols that are based on communication between Clanmates, the Clan and outsiders, or with other Clans.
Canon Examples: Squirrelstar, Tigerstar I, Ashfur
MEDIATOR¶
Cats with the MEDIATOR skill are able to intuit and negotiate compromises between their peers. They specialize in listening to those around them and influencing relationships for better or for worse. This skill is applicable in events and patrols that are focused on interpersonal communication as well as stoking or soothing conflict.
Canon Examples: Tree
CLEVER¶
Cats with the CLEVER skill are creative and intelligent and use their mind to come up with innovative and sophisticated solutions to challenges they encounter. This skill is applicable in patrols and events that require a sophisticated set of events, solution to a problem, or are about outsmarting predator, prey, and other cats.
Canon Examples: Jayfeather
INSIGHTFUL¶
Cats with the INSIGHTFUL skill are able to intuit the emotions and potential motivations of cats around them. They are skilled at detecting truth from lies as well as unspoken or masked feelings. This skill is applicable in events and patrols that focus on interpersonal relationships or discerning the motivations of rogues or other Clans.
Canon Examples: Firestar, Hawkfrost
SENSE¶
Cats with the SENSE skill have exceptional sensory capabilities. At the highest tier their senses even border on supernatural. They can see, hear, taste, or smell further and more vividly than other cats, allowing them to pick up on minute environmental details. This skill is applicable to a spectrum of patrols and events, though it is particularly useful in the context of exploration and detail orientation.
Canon Examples: Dovewing
KIT¶
Cats with the KIT skill are particularly skilled in taking care of the young and old alike. This skill has little to do with the cat’s personality and more to do with their capabilities. It is particularly applicable in thoughts, events, and patrols that are about the wellbeing of others, particularly looking after younger cats.
Canon Examples: Daisy, Ferncloud
STORY¶
Cats with the STORY skill are able to entertain others with fabulous stories and tales. They can use these stories to motivate or entertain those around them. It is particularly applicable in events and patrols that take place in groups with an audience to entertain.

Canon Examples: Skywatcher, Midnight
CAMP¶
Cats with the CAMP skill are experts at fortifying dens and improving the structural safety of their Clan’s camp. They tend to have great organizational skills. This skill is particularly applicable in events and patrols that require coordination, organization, or any rudimentary ‘building’ or trapsetting.
Canon Examples: Dustpelt, Brackenfur
HEALER¶
Cats with the HEALER skill are those that are particularly skilled or innovative healers. While cats with the Healer skill make great medicine cats, they don’t necessarily have to be one nor do they necessarily have a great bedside manner. This skill is particularly applicable in thoughts, events, and patrols that have to do with medicine or herb-gathering. This skill can be explored both in its application to medicine cats but also its application to Clan members of other roles.
Canon Examples: Yellowfang, Leafpool
STAR & DARK¶
Cats with the STAR or DARK skills have an innate connection to their respective afterlife and are favored by cats from that afterlife. They do not experience prophecies or visions but rather tend to be the subject of them. They can occasionally see or hear cats from the respective afterlife or dream of them. This skill is particularly applicable in events and patrols as a form of luck or wisdom that intercedes in their daily life, or occasional encounters with spirits from the afterlife represented in the skill. Thoughts and events are great places to consider how the skills would intersect with different personalities (e.g. a confident cat thrilled to be chosen by the Dark Forest or an insecure cat unsure they can live up to StarClan’s expectations).
Canon Examples: Firestar (StarClan) / Ashfur (Dark), Ivypool (Dark)
OMEN¶
Cats with the OMEN skill are able to read signs in the natural world, such as the way leaves unfold, or the sound of birdcalls into predictions of the future. They do not receive visions or receive spoken-word riddles like those with the PROPHET skill. While they can receive omens of imminent events, that could be applicable to the way they behave in events or patrols, they also can interpret and intuit events far in the future to attempt to predict the fate of cats in the Clan.
Canon Examples: Rock, Cinderpelt, Pebbleheart
DREAM¶
Cats with the DREAM skill are able to walk in the dreams of other cats. As the skill progresses the cat becomes able to control the skill more from mere wanderings to intentionally choosing whether to peer in another's dreams. This skill is applicable primarily in thoughts and events and is linked typically to the contents of or the cat of the dreams they walked in.
Canon Examples: Jayfeather
CLAIRVOYANT¶
Cats with the CLAIRVOYANT skill are able to sense fragments of the past or potential futures. Unlike other supernatural skills, which tend to be outside the cat’s control, clairvoyant cats have some degree of control over when they have these visions or can even channel them for their benefit. These visions are both visual or sensory but tend to be vague flashes in time, not long sustained visions. This skill is applicable in events and patrols that directly engage with these visions in snippet lists or even as a way to foresee danger.
Canon Examples: Stoneteller, Goosefeather
PROPHET¶
Cats with the PROPHET skill are those that receive visions or spoken-word prophetic riddles, typically from StarClan. These cats untangle the potential meanings of the prophecies and who they potentially affect. This skill is more applicable in events and patrols centered around receiving such prophecies or helping interpret them.
Canon Examples: Spottedleaf, Firestar
GHOST¶
Cats with the GHOST skill are able to see ghosts. They often see wispy figures of their ancestors and strangers alike. They are not necessarily chosen by any of the afterlives, but occasionally get glimpses of the spirits of the past and how they engaged in the living world. This skill is applicable in events and patrols that involve death and the dead. They are also subject matter for interactions with ghosts.
Canon Examples: Rootspring, Goosefeather
